Democratization in English(es): Workshop at ICAME 39

Lucía Loureiro-Porto, together with Turo Hiltunen (University of Helsinki) held a workshop entitled Democratization in English(es): Synchronic and diachronic perspectives at ICAME 39, Tampere, 30 May-3 June. The success of the workshop was the thematic coherence and quality of the papers given by Minna Palander-Collin, Minna Nevala, Turo Hiltunen, Jenni Riihimäki, Jukka Tyrkkö, Laura Paterson, Lucía Loureiro-Porto, Elena Seoane, Susanne Wagner, Svenja Kranich, Elizabeth Hampel, Hanna Bruns and Nick Smith.

From 18 to 21 April, Cristina Suárez, Gerold Schneider (affiliated member of our project) and Elena Seoane visited Gibraltar with the aim of compiling material for the written component of ICE-GBR. We worked intensively with Dr Jennifer Ballantine, also an affiliated member of our project, who provided us with relevant texts from official reports (administrative writing) and magazines (popular writing) at the Garrison Library.

A new research project awarded to ViEW (Re-ViEW)

On December 26th it was announced that our research project "A register aprroach to morphosyntactic variation in World Englishes and compilation of resources for its study (The International Corpus of English - Gibraltar)," Re-ViEW, has received three-year funding from the National Programme for Excellence in Scientific and Technical Research (Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, grant FFI2017-82162-P), €60.500 plus one four-year PhD research position.

Lucía Loureiro-Porto and Turo Hiltunen, from the University of Helsinki, will hold the Workshop entitled Democratization in English(es): Synchronic and Diachronic Perspectives during the 39th International Conference of ICAME, to be held in Tampere, Finland, from May 30 to June2 2018. The call for papers is open until 15 December.

Cristina Suárez delivers a lecture at the University of Cardiff on relatives in WEs

On 25 October, Cristina Suárez-Gómez delivered a lecture entitled Language contact and grammatical complexity in the structural nativization of relative clauses in Asian Englishes. She was invited by Dr Sara Pons-Sanz, Senior Lecturer at the School of English, Communication and Philosophy of the University of Cardiff. In her lecture she examined morphosyntactic variation in World Englishes.

On 28 September, our team members Cristina Suárez-Gómez and Lucía Loureiro-Porto successfully organised, together with Robert Fuchs (Hong Kong Baptist University), the workshop entitled "Morphosyntactic Variation in World Englishes: Apparent-time and diachronic studies" within the International Conference 7BICLCE (Vigo, 28-30 September).

Guest Seminar by Michael Westphal: New Englishes - New Methods

On 2 October Dr. Michael Westphal, from the University of Münster, gave a seminar entitled New Englishes - New Methods, divided into two parts. Part 1 dealt with Tag questions across Englishes with a focus on text type variation, and part 2 concentrated on language attitude research with special reference to mixed methods.

E. Seoane on Editorial Board of Benjamins' Register Studies

Elena Seoane has been appointed to serve at the Editorial Board of the new John Benjamins' journal Register Studies (ISSN 2542-9477), edited by Jesse Egbert (Northern Arizona University) and Bethany Gray (Iowa State University), with Douglas Biber (Northern Arizona University) as Consulting Editor.

Raquel P. Romasanta defends her MA Thesis on complementation across varieties of English

On 14 June Raquel P. Romasanta successfully defended her MA thesis entitled "Synchronic Variation in Clausal Complementation: The case of regret in British and American English". This is her initial step towards a PhD on morphosyntactic variation in World Englishes, which will be supervised by Elena Seoane. Congratulations, Raquel!

Elena Seoane, new member of Executive Board of ICAME

At the General Assembly of ICAME, held during the 38th ICAME Conference which took place at Charles University in Prague (23 to 28 May 2017), Elena Seoane was nominated and elected as a new member of the ICAME Executive Board, where she will serve for a period of four years (opting to renewal for another four years).
