Marina Pérez Martín

I hold a BA in English Studies (2023) from the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) (Spain), where I was honored with the "Premi Extraordinari de Grau" (Best Degree Student Award).

During the 2021/2022 academic year, as an undergraduate student, I worked as a research assistant under the supervision of Lucía Loureiro-Porto. My tasks primarily involved the transcription and coding of texts from the ICE-Gibraltar corpus. That same year, I spent a semester as an Erasmus student at University College Cork (Ireland).

In 2024, I earned an MA in Modern Languages and Literatures with a specialization in Theoretical and Applied Linguistics, also from the University of the Balearic Islands. My MA thesis was titled "The BE-passive in Gibraltar English: A variationist analysis," and it was supervised by Lucía Loureiro-Porto. 

In September 2024, I was awarded a four-year predoctoral grant from the Government of the Balearic Islands (FPU-CAIB2024). I am currently working on my PhD dissertation, which examines the BE-passive in Gibraltar English with a focus on morphosyntactic variation, socio-cultural pragmatics, and language contact phenomena, also under the supervision of Lucía Loureiro-Porto. This dissertation aligns with the research focus of the project “Variation in English Worldwide” (ViEW).

This year, I have also joined the Department of Spanish, Modern and Classical Languages at the University of the Balearic Islands to collaborate on research and teaching activities.

My research interests include the study of English morphology, syntax, and pragmatics in the field of World Englishes, with special reference to Gibraltar English.
