Next 10 May, ViEW affiliated member M.G. Sanchez, an internationally acclaimed Gibraltarian writer, will deliver an online lecture entitled Marlboro Man and the History of Cross-border Smuggling. This is part of a research event organised by Cristina Suárez Gómez and Lucía Loureiro Porto at the University of the Balearic Islands. We invite all students and scholars interested in the socilinguistics of Gibraltar in the 20th and 21st century.

On 29 April the ViEW member Emily Weidle (University of Dortmund) delievered a seminar on the use of ELAN, which we intend to use for the spoken part of ICE-GBR, the Gibraltarian component of the International Corpus of English that we are compiling in ViEW. We also intend to use it in a study on code-switching in Gibraltar together with Carmen Parafita, the new member of LVTC.

On 25th January, PhD student Pablo Vilas Santamaría delivered a seminar on his PhD research, entitled "I admit I need feedback: Clausal complementation in inner and outer circle varieties". This was part of the research seminars Listening to the Voices That Count, organised by the LVTC group. We are very grateful to the audience for their generous feedback and useful discussion of his ongoing research.

In December 2021, the new collective volume edited by Elena Seoane and Douglas Biber came out in the Benjamins' series Studies in Corpus Linguistics: Corpus-based Approaches to Register Variation. As the first collective volume to focus exclusively on corpus-based approaches to register variation, the chapters herein provide an exhaustive account of the range and depth of possibilities that the vast domain of register variation in English has to offer. They illustrate register variation analysis in different theoretical frameworks, such as Probabilistic Grammar, Systemic Functional Linguistics, Information Theory, and propose a new framework within the Text Linguistic Approach, the continuous-situational analytical framework. Many of the contributions apply Multi-Dimensional Analysis to corpus data in order to unveil register (dis)similarities, while others rely on logistic regression models and periodization techniques based on Kullback-Leibler divergence. The volume includes both inter-register and intra-register variation in British and American English, in a wide range of L2 varieties, in learner varieties and in EFL, and also contains diachronic studies covering early and late Modern English. Such a broad scope should be a source of inspiration for anyone interested in historical and ongoing register variation in a vast range of varieties of English worldwide.

Raquel P. Romasanta has obtained the three-year postodoctoral contract Margarita Salas, a competitive grant offered by the Ministry of Universities. She will be working with the SPERTUS team, led by Ignacio Palacios Martínez at the University of Santiago de Compostela. Congratulations!

On 3 November, our colleague Cristina Suárez-Gómez passed the accreditation exam qualifying her for promotion to a position as Full Professor of English Language and Linguistics.

On 26 October, Heidi Douglas presented her PhD research project within the LVTC seminars (Listening to the Voices that Count). Her talk was entitled "English as a Lingua Franca and its repercussions on English Language Teaching", and we're grateful for the feedback received!

It is a great pleasure to announce that on 27 September 2021, ViEW member Elena Seoane became Full Professor of English Linguistics.
