Raquel Pereira Romasanta (ViEW project) has obtained PhD this morning. The dissertation is entitled "Variation in the clausal complementation system in World Englishes: A corpus-based study of REGRET" and merited the highest grade (sobresaliente cum laude). Supervisors: Elena Seoane and Manfred Krug (University of Bamberg).
We want to express our gratitude to the board members, Professors Sarah Buschfeld (TU Dortmund), Pérez-Guerra (UVigo) and Loureiro-Porto (UIB), for the wealth and depth of their feedback.
Raquel is now a postdoctoral fellow at our team, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness.

As announced recently, Héctor defended his PhD on 3 December and obtained the maximum qualification, Sobresaliente cum laude.

CONVOCATORIA para a contratación dun/ha colaborador/a de apoio á investigación no proxecto Re-ViEW: A register approach to morphosyntactic variation in World Englishes and compilation of resources for its study (The International Corpus of English - Gibraltar), financiado polo Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades do Goberno de España (FFI2017-82162-P).
Este proxecto pertence ó grupo de investigación LVTC (Language Variation and Textual Categorisation), do Departamento de Fioloxía Inglesa, Francesa e Alemá da Universidade de Vigo.
Duración: 02/11/2020 a 31/12/2020.
Modalidade: Tempo parcial, 37 horas/semana.

Requisitos e méritos:
Formación regrada: Grao/Licenciatura en Estudos Ingleses ou equivalente.
Experiencia demostrable nas tarefas a desenvolver na liña de investigación: manexo das redes sociáis con propósitos académicos, transcripción de textos, compilación de corpus lingüísticos, codificación de textos en linguaxe XML, etc.
Experiencia de traballo e colaboración en equipos de investigación da área de investigación.
Traballo a desenvolver e condicións contractuais:
Apoio a labores de investigación na liña de investigación: Búsqueda de fontes de datos lingüísticos co fin de compilar un corpus textual de inglés contemporáneo; transcripción e anotación XML dos textos seleccionados; elaboración de informes; manexo das redes sociáis con fines académicos.
Proceso de selección:
A preselección de persoas candidatas farase segundo a valoración dos "Requisitos e méritos" por unha comisión formada por membros do grupo de investigación. As persoas candidatas coas puntuacións superiores serán convocadas a unha entrevista na que se avaliarán as súas competencias no manexo e na anotación de corpus, así como nas técnicas estatísticas correspondentes. Trala entrevista, a comisión publicará a listaxe das persoas seleccionadas e de reserva. Se a avaliación non é satisfactoria, a comisión poderá declarar deserta a oferta de contrato.

We are glad to announce that Cristina Suárez-Gómez has been invited to be one of the Plenary Speakers at ICAME 42, to be held at Dortmund both on-site and online in August 18-21, 2021. Her plenary lecture will be concerned with the topic of the conference, "Crossing boundaries through corpora", and will deal with Gibraltar English in the light of corpus linguistic work and with Gibraltar's special status within the World Englishes paradigm. The other plenary speakers are Naomi Nagy (University of Toronto), Martin Schweinberger (The University of Queensland, Australia) and Benedikt Szmrecsanyi (KU Leuven).
On 2 June Raquel Romasanta was awarded the Richard M. Hogg Prize of the International Society for the Linguistics of English (IsLE) for her paper "Negation as a predictor of clausal complement choice in World Englishes"
The Prize is awarded in open competition to early-career scholars, both pre and postdoctoral scholars. The Prize involves cash prize of £500, the publication of her paper on the IsLE website, an invitation and financial support to present her work in the next IsLE conference, and, additionally, an invitation to submit her prize-winning paper for competitive review for publication in English Language and Linguistics, the journal closely associated with the aims of the Society. Congratulations, Raquel, this is a major achievement!
During the 8th Biennial International Conference on the Linguistics of Contemporary English (8 BICLCE) held at the Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg, Germany (26-28 September), Raquel P. Romasanta was awarded the prize to the Best Paper presented at the conference by a junior researcher. Her paper, entitled Negation and the Cognitive Complexity Principle in the English Clausal Complementation System is part of her PhD project, supervised by Elena Seoane and Manfred Krug.
At the General Assembly of ICAME, held during the ICAME 40 Conference which took place at the University of Neuchâtel (1-6 June 2019), Cristina Suárez-Gómez was nominated and elected as a new member of the ICAME Executive Board, where she will serve for a period of four years (opting to renewal for another four years). ICAME is the International Computer Archive of Modern and Medieval English, an international organization of linguists and information scientists working with English machine-readable texts. The aim of the organization is to collect and distribute information on English language material available for computer processing and on linguistic research completed or in progress on the material, as well as to to compile an archive of English text corpora in machine-readable form, and to make material available to research institutions. ICAME publishes the ICAME Journal, which appears once a year, with articles and information about English computer corpora.
